A Message from Dr. Alan Kaye, RSC President, to All RSC Members - In Memoriam

Members of the RSC Family,

I am saddened to tell you of the passing of one of the former Presidents of our Society, Jerry Berg. I got to know Jerry through our society. He appointed me chairman of the legislative committee approximately 25 years ago, and his mentorship made a great difference for me and our Chapter. After his tenure as President and then even after his retirement, Jerry was a regular attendee at our Executive Committee and then Chapter meetings. Jerry’s astute intellect and experience were valuable in the guidance of our Chapter’s work.

Jerry was bright, insightful, honest, and fair. He was a founding member of his radiology practice at Waterbury Hospital, where he became chairman of his department and of his practice. He was instrumental in making his practice thrive. His practice took pride in its roles as educators. Some of the radiologists taught Yale residents in New Haven, and his Waterbury department hosted trainees from Yale. Later, when the Netter School of Medicine opened in Connecticut, Jerry joined the volunteer faculty.

He was the ideal role model as a physician and a person. He strived for balance in life. He loved tennis – and was very good at it. He was very proud of his Bronze Medal representing the USA at the Maccabeah Games in Israel. He served his community in numerous volunteer roles, and did them well enough to earn recognition and awards.

One of Jerry’s traits that always stood out was his positive attitude, surprisingly even after his diagnosis of cancer. We spoke several times during his illness, and even though Jerry understood his odds, he was resolved to do his best to fight the disease and keep as normal a life as possible.

I will have fond memories of Jerry, as I am sure will those of you who knew him. For those who, unfortunately, did not, please be aware of his persona and accomplishments. More importantly, if we strive to be like him, our specialty, our patients, and our families will all be better for the effort, as will we.

Dr. Alan Kaye, RSC President

Arrangements and obituary follow:

Dr. Berg passed away peacefully last night at his home. He was an ACR Fellow, RSC president, and member of Diagnostic Radiology Associates in Waterbury and Waterbury Hospital.

The funeral will be at Congregation B'nai Jacob in Woodbridge at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, February 19. Shiva will be at the home of Melissa (Berg) and Dr. Andrew Lawson on Sunday through Thursday evenings at 1 Fox Den Way, Woodbridge. All are welcome to attend the funeral or Shiva.

Below is the obituary that will go in the paper:

Gerald (Jerry) R. Berg. M.D. (74), cherished husband of Barbara L. Berg of 53 years, and longtime New Haven area resident, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loving family on February 18, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Jackson Heights, NY in May 1942, son of the late Alban and Sylvia Berg and brother of the late Stanley Berg. Jerry was the loving father of Adam and Melissa P. of Wolcott, VT, Jason and Laura Berg of Northampton, MA and Melissa and Andrew Lawson of Woodbridge, CT. He was also the best Papa ever to Matthew, Alex and Emily, Samantha and Sarah, and Ginger and Daisy. Jerry was honored to serve the Waterbury community for over 40 years as a physician and founding member of Diagnostic Radiology Associates. He was a proud member of Congregation B’nai Jacob where he served on various committees. Upon retirement, Jerry could not sit still so he invested his time in volunteering to coach tennis at both North Haven High School and Chapel Haven.

Funeral will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at 12:30 P.M. at Congregation B’nai Jacob in Woodbridge, CT.
