RSC Raises Awareness of Pancreatic Cancer
Governor Lamont proclaimed November as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in the State of Connecticut. The RSC has been very active promoting and bringing focus to the need for high-risk patients to be screened and tested for this insidious disease.
The Radiological Society of Connecticut hosted Governor Ned Lamont at a news event on November 18, 2024, held at Advanced Radiology Consultants in Trumbull to heighten awareness of Pancreatic Cancer and the need for more people to be screened for the disease. Early detection can lead to interventions that help control the disease even though a cure remains elusive.
Linda Kowalski, RSC executive director, organized the event and served as MC. Participants included Dino Verrelli, Founder and CEO of Project Purple, a leading Connecticut charity that helps fund research into Pancreatic Cancer as well as provides support for families and patients who endure this disease.
We were honored to have Trumbull First Selectwoman Vicki Tesoro in attendance along with state Senator Tony Hwang and state Rep. Sarah Keitt. The legislators made brief remarks.
A poignant moment during the event was a comment made by Dr. Adam Kaye, who mentioned how the disease took the life of one their best and most respected doctors, Dr. Steven M. Cohen. He also mentioned a lifelong friend, Alyson Luck, who he pushed to have a screening. Alyson Luck is a two-and-a-half-year survivor of Pancreatic Cancer; she also shared her story at the event.
Wrapping up the news conference, Governor Lamont urged people at risk of the disease to consult their healthcare professional to determine if they should be tested. The governor said resources are available to help those who lack the ability to pay for the treatment. He read from the Official Proclamation that he issued to deem November as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month in the state of Connecticut.
