Obituary: Dr. Julian Mandell

The Radiological Society of Connecticut offers condolences to the family of Dr. Neal Mandell on the passing of his father, the esteemed Dr. Julian Mandell.

Dr. Julian Mandell recently of Vernon, Vermont was born in the Bronx NY in 1923, the son of Anna and Milton Mandell. He and his family moved to Hartford in 1933. He graduated from Weaver High School and went to the University Connecticut where he took degrees in Physics and Physical Chemistry. Julian joined the US Army and attended Boston University School of Medicine after discharge. During medical school he married Lucille Lenore Lubow of New London, CT. He completed his internship at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and a Fellowship in Pathology at Boston City Hospital. Dr. Mandell did his residency in radiology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. After residency he served in the US Air Force as a radiologist, following which he moved his family to New Britain, Connecticut where he established Radiology Practices in New Britain, West Hartford and Southington. He practiced Radiology for more than 40 years. He established the first dedicated mammographic unit in Connecticut. He enjoyed sailing, boating and chatting on his HAM radio and spending time with his family and dog at Groton Long Point. He leaves behind Lucille, his wife of 73 years, three sons, Neal, Paul and Todd, their spouses Amy, Sandi and Richard and six grandchildren Sarah, Ben, Zachary, Jake, Aaron and Nathan. A celebration of Julian's life will be held in the future.
